863. Welcome to Blog 94. Did you know that Pope Francis and Mayor Paine had something in common? Apparently the Pope was a very difficult person to get along with. He did not like people arguing with him and did not like to be told he was wrong. Mmm? Pope Paine the First? Probably not.

POPE PAINE?

POPE
864.Lots of breaking news in the last few days. We have a gaggle of goofball Mayors {including our own} who think they are going to save millions of lives. My guess is the number will be closer to zero. And we have Jim Paine the know-it-all and the smartest man in the room chime in with yet another Paine-Ism. All that and more. So let’s start with some breaking news.

Just when you think things in the world can’t get anymore stupid it does. This next story is so stupid on so many levels that it demands an explanation.
Mayors Institute on Pedestrian Safety

The Mayors Institute on Pedestrian Safety (MIPS) is a partnership between the Mayors Innovation Project, AARP Livable Communities and Smart Growth America to help mayors create communities that are safe, vibrant, and equitable for people of all ages. MIPS will provide mayors an opportunity to learn from both topic experts and their peers about how to create safer streets and better protect their most vulnerable neighbors.
THIS IS FROM MAYOR PAINE’S FACEBOOK PAGE
April 13, 2025
We need to improve pedestrian safety, especially for kids. I wrote a grant to the Mayor’s Innovation Project and Superior was one of only 12 cities selected. Over the next year, I’ll work with these cities to create better ways to move you safely through Superior. The project will partner with the AARP and Smart Growth America to design our cities in a way that fosters economic development and builds nicer neighborhoods.
COMMENTS
865-WHAT? I lived in Superior for almost 15 years and not once did I feel like I needed someone to create better ways to move me safely through the city. How about you? Off the top of my head I don’t remember reading any stories about people getting hit by cars in Superior. I’m not saying there haven’t been any but I don’t think it’s an epidermic. On the other hand, here in Vegas there seems to be one every other day. I smell a scam. A big scam. And we will get on that later in this Blog. Here are a few comments left by readers on his Facebook page.
1-AARP is political stooge. Why don’t you fly to DC and meet with the pro business Trump officials and bring some great paying jobs to Superior. This is a great opportunity for you to serve Superiorities. You didn’t reply to my message. Like I said, I’ll go with you.
2-Let's start with all the potholes
3-Let's be honest you care more about abortion than you do the kids! You're not fooling me. What's the real agenda behind your city plan?
Of course the infantile Paine had to respond.
Jim Paine, Mayor of Superior
You got me. I’m in the pocket of the “Walking to School Safely” lobby.
866-MY COMMENT- Maybe not, but you are in the “raising taxes lobby”, more regulations lobby” and “less freedoms lobby “and many other “Lobbies”.
So you might be better off keeping your snotty remarks to yourself. And FYI, we don’t need “Walking Lessons” from you and the other 11 knuckle heads on that commission.
867-MY COMMENT-And of course, no comment section would be complete without hearing from # 1 Jim Paine Super-Fan, Dee Dee “Flamingo Feathers” Fetters:

Very good news. I love how you keep moving forward with a new innovative ideas which allow our city to continue to shine.
So what do our friends at Soupnutz.net have to say about this? Here it is.

Anti-Business Mayor Jim Paine Joins Pedestrian Safety Club—But Still Can’t Navigate a Pro-Business Agenda
April 21, 2025
Soupnutz.net Exclusive: Paine Wants Safer Sidewalks—Too Bad He Keeps Tripping Over His Own Policies

Good news, Superior! Mayor Jim Paine has been selected to join the 2025 Mayors Institute on Pedestrian Safety (MIPS), a prestigious little club where 12 mayors sit around and brainstorm how to help people not die while crossing the street.
That’s right—while the rest of the country is worried about inflation, housing, and not choking on climate change, Mayor Paine’s laser-focused on making sure your stroll to Kwik Trip doesn’t turn into a “Final Destination” reboot.

“We want folks to want to walk through their neighborhoods and through their community year-round,” Paine said.
Translation: Please ignore the shuttered storefronts, but do enjoy the improved crosswalk while passing them.

Business in the Front, Crosswalk in the Back
Mayor Paine insists safer streets will boost the economy, saying:
“If folks have any doubt about their safety, they probably won’t cross that street. And a business may lose an opportunity at that customer.”
Cute theory. But here’s the reality: Crossing the street doesn’t cost Superior businesses customers—Mayor Paine’s anti-business administration has that covered all by itself.
Let’s talk receipts:
- Opposed the Nemadji Trail Energy Center, a job-creating project with strong labor backing.
- Wants to municipalize broadband and water services like he’s building a Soviet Sim City.
- Regularly rolls out red tape like it’s a damn carpet to stop businesses.
You want walkability? Cool. But how about making sure there’s still something to walk to?

The Voters Have Spoken—and They’re Tired of the B.S.
And speaking of getting walked out—let’s not ignore the giant political wrench voters just threw into Paine’s pedestrian paradise: his wife, Jenny Van Sickle, got voted out of office.
Yeah. Maybe now he’ll finally find that ambition he’s been saving for a rainy day—now that the citizens of Superior sent a crystal-clear message: We’re tired of the antics, the performative politics, and the vanity projects.
Maybe getting served a slice of humble pie at the family dinner table will finally snap him out of his “sidewalks will save the world” trance.

Icy Sidewalks and Even Colder Politics
Let’s get real: trying to create a pedestrian-friendly utopia in a city where half the year the sidewalks are basically iced-over booby traps is a stretch. It’s adorable. It’s delusional. It’s Peak Paine™.
Meanwhile, Superior’s business community is getting frostbite waiting for some pro-growth policy—and watching as City Hall pours its energy into slapping neon paint on crosswalks and calling it economic development.

Final Crossing Signal
Look, we’re all for not getting run over by a speeding minivan. But while Jim Paine’s out there fighting the noble war for walkability, the rest of us are wondering when he’ll stop tripping over the private sector.
The sidewalks might be safer soon, but the city’s economic future? Still in a dangerous intersection.

Mayor eyes pedestrian safety with national cohort
By Shelley Nelson - Superior Telegram-April 18, 2025
SUPERIOR — Mayor Jim Paine is joining a cohort of a dozen mayors from across the county to work toward safer streets for all Superior residents.

Paine was selected to participate in the 2025 Mayors Institute on Pedestrian Safety, a partnership among the Mayors Innovation Project, AARP Livable Communities and Smart Growth America.
Paine said he was selected to join the cohort based on a grant application he wrote that demonstrated the political will to improve pedestrian safety, work done toward that goal and demonstrated willingness to carry forward recommendations of the institute.

“That’s the case I really made, that pedestrian safety and walkability have been one of my highest infrastructure and community-building priorities since well before I was elected,” Paine said. “This was part of my 2015 campaign for mayor.”
COMMENTS

869-What? Are you serious? With all the problems like drugs, high taxes, pot holes, roads in some areas barely drivable and public safety you are trying to tell me and my readers that “Pedestrian safety and walkability have been one of my highest infrastructure and community-building priorities since well before I was elected,”
In the fifteen years I lived here nobody has ever expressed that concern to me. In other words I’m not buying that BS.
BACK TO THE STORY...
Over the next six months, the mayors will engage in a mix of virtual and in-person sessions with national experts and fellow mayors to address safety challenges.
In early May, Paine said they will attend an intensive session in Washington, D.C. Monthly meetings will follow.
While the city has an active transportation plan that was adopted by the city council in 2020, Paine said Superior still has some pernicious problems that can’t be solved easily, such as large streets and high-traffic corridors where the standard approaches don’t work as well as they should.
“What I’m looking for are really the small ideas that can be executed in big ways,” Paine said. The mayor encouraged residents to reach out to his office to help identify problem areas.
COMMENTS

870-I’m being serious when I say I could follow Joe Biden’s train of thought over the last 4 years much easier than I can follow Jim Paine’s. This last paragraph is close to impossible to understand. But I wish Shelley Nelson would have asked him what he meant when he said the following because I sure don’t.
Paine said. “What I’m looking for are really the small ideas that can be executed in big ways.”
And don’t forget this line:
“In early May, Paine said they will attend an intensive session in Washington, D.C. Monthly meetings will follow.”
The key word here in “INTENSIVE”. Typical Paine. He does this all the time. He slips in a word or two to give you the impression that not only is he the “smartest man in the world”, he’s also the “hardest working man in the world” as well. And people who do that are usually quite the opposite. Go back to some of my older Blogs that have copies of his “cadaver like” schedules.

Is Jim Paine the smartest man in the room? No. Is he the weirdest man in the room? Yes. There is something seriously wrong with this guy. Maybe it’s neurological. Is there a doctor in the house?
IS THIS STORY IMPORTANT?

871-No, it’s not important at all. In fact it’s completely bogus as far as I’m concerned. But if you listen to Jim Paine, it’s one of the most important things in the world to him. He just told Shelley Nelson the following:
“That’s the case I really made, that pedestrian safety and walkability have been one of my highest infrastructure and community-building priorities since well before I was elected, ” Paine said. “This was part of my 2015 campaign for mayor.”

Like I said, the story itself is not important but the story within the story is. I will do my best to explain this once again, Jim Paine mangled story.
SAFETY STARTS AT HOME AND SCHOOL
872-When I was a little boy growing up in Ottawa, starting in kindergarten (no pre-school back then) safety was priority one . And of course prior to going to school we had parents who were constantly hammering us about safety. At school they provided us with flyers, stickers, books, buttons and more safety stuff. And the Canadian government ran radio and TV ads with the two safety mascots they invented. Elmer the Safety Elephant (1947) and Walter Safety (1963) (He was the water safety guy). In fact he had a catchy song that I remember to this day. Kind of like the Oscar Mayer song.

ELMER

WALTER SAFETY
And that’s why to this day I always look both ways before I cross a street. Hell, I even look both ways while I’m crossing. It’s automatic. I don’t even think of it. So I guess everything they taught us back then worked. We didn’t and don’t need twelve hack politicians to figure it out. More on them later.
WHO IS THE AARP?

873- The AARP are the ones who are sponsoring the “Terrible Twelve” Mayors in their quest to teach you how to walk. So I decided to try and get a better understanding about them. In their own words, this how the AARP view themselves.
“Advocating for you and for all Americans age 50-plus has been at the core of AARP’s mission since our founding in 1958. It's a big part of what we do every day from our headquarters in Washington, D.C., and from our offices in all 53 states and territories. “

“AARP doesn’t endorse or give money to political candidates, parties or campaigns. We do not work with candidates or campaigns to use our name in ads or other campaign efforts. Ever. When AARP’s name is misused by a campaign, we ask that they take it down. Our non-partisan status matters to us and to our members, especially in this day and age, and has been verified by numerous independent fact checkers”.
COMMENTS
874-After reading up on them my takeaway is that they really go out of their way to push the non-partisan narrative but I’m not so sure I’m on board with that at all. If you Google them it should take you about 10 seconds to find thousands of people who don’t agree with their non-partisan statements. Here are some random statements I got off the internet:

1-Yes, though they do this in a round about way. By their expenditures in lobbying efforts, donations to PACS and charities that support Democrats and liberal policies.I would say LIBERAL is the more important part of AARP than anything else. If it was always so or not I cannot say, but it certainly is now. Read their magazine and articles by AARP printed by other media outlets. With very very few exceptions thy always come down on the side of progressive-liberal policies, and ideals….
So massively so that AMAC was created to provide a more balanced view, since AARP seldom if ever supports a conservative policy or approach to problems.
2-“AARP” is a pretend “seniors organization” in which the membership has ZERO voice. The officers are appointed by the controlling company, and the “president” appeared before Congress to support a bill that was OPPOSED by 80% of the membership.
3-AARP is definitely on the left side. I left them several years ago and joined AMAC which leans to the right side.
4-Is AARP really nonpartisan?
No such thing these days, they are as liberal as it comes supporting democrats for decades.
5-I’ve had the opportunity to compare both the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) and the Association of Mature American Citizens (AMAC) directly.
AARP generally represents the Swamp, or the status quo—which often aligns with Democrat Party ideologies.
AMAC is a far more conservative organization I’d describe as Libertarian and certainly more aligned with the ideologies of Ronald Reagan.
Therefore I’d agree AARP is more political supportive of the DNC and my money goes to AMAC membership.
6-I don’t know if they officially endorse the party, but AARP is definitely in cahoots with the loony left.
COMMENTS
875-Like I said, you can find thousands of comments like this online. So I read somewhere that this party, conference or whatever you want to call it with the “Terrible Twelve” would not cost the taxpayer any money. So I did some research. Here is what I found:
HOW IS THE AARP FUNDED?
The AARP is funded by members, donations and through the commercial operations of its business arm, AARP Financial, which provides both retirement planning, investment and insurance services to AARP members at discounted rates. The AARP receives substantial additional funding from the “FEDERAL GOVERNMENT”. It is not affiliated with any religious organization.

TAXPAYER
The AARP does have a significant political advocacy arm that spends tens of millions of dollars every year lobbying the government on issues of interest to its membership. In addition, the AARP receives millions per year from the “FEDERAL GOVERNMENT” in subsidies for its work to provide education to seniors on issues related to health care, financial planning and retirement. The AARP is technically a nonpartisan advocacy group, and has lobbied legislators of both major parties.
COMMENTS
876-So there you have it. The “Mayors Institute on Pedestrian Safety” will be subsidized by taxpayer money. And it gets worse. If you go on Open Secrets, 95% of AARP donations went to Democrats. So this notion that they are non-partisan just doesn’t hold up. So I then decided to take a closer look at the “Terrible Twelve” because if Jim Paine is in it, intelligence and hard work, mustn’t be a requirement.

THE TERRIBLE TWELVE CITIES AND BIOS

877-So who are these Mayors and where are they from? Well we did the work so you don’t have to.

* Little Rock, AR has been named the 5th most dangerous city to live in the nation by US News. A Google search gave us this. Yes, that's correct. Little Rock, AR has been consistently ranked among the most dangerous cities in the United States, including in the top 5, based on crime statistics. Studies and news reports frequently cite high rates of violent crime, property crime, and aggravated assault in Little Rock as contributing factors to its dangerous ranking.

** Hard to believe that a city of 7,899, would have pedestrian problems or would have much to add at this type of conference. I don’t think this is a “Real” conference anyway. More on that in my final comments. Me thinks ole’ Maureen might be in it for the free ride. In fact, I think they all are. And Everett, we have a problem. See the following story below.
After relationship with mayor, Everett deputy mayor quietly resigns
Wednesday, December 13, 2023

NICK AND CASSIE SITTING IN A TREE...
EVERETT — After an outside investigation earlier this year into his romantic relationship with the mayor, the former deputy mayor no longer works for the city of Everett.
On Oct. 17, Nick Harper submitted his letter of resignation, effective two days later, city spokesperson Simone Tarver said in an email. The city didn’t announce his departure or say why he resigned. Tarver said the city doesn’t usually publicly announce employee resignations.

In this case, the employee in question made headlines, becoming the subject of a publicly funded investigation and public scandal.
Tarver said Harper was on “protected medical leave” leading up to his resignation and did not receive a severance package.
“Having lived and worked in Everett since 2006, it has been an honor to have had the opportunity to serve in the City these past five and a half years,” Harper wrote in his resignation letter obtained via public records request. “The City is fortunate to have a very dedicated workforce, and I wish each and every team member the best.”

His resignation letter did not reference the relationship. It was addressed to city Labor and Administrative Services Director Kandy Bartlett.
“Once again, I want to extend my gratitude to you, and everyone I have had the opportunity to work with at the City for allowing me this opportunity,” Harper wrote.

The relationship between the mayor and her subordinate caused a stir in City Hall last year. It was disclosed to human resources and the City Council prior to the investigation, Tarver said.
In February, the City Council voted to hire Amy Kangas Alexander, of Stokes Lawrence P.S., to investigate the relationship between the mayor and her deputy mayor.
A few months later, the investigation found no misuse of city funds or violations of policy, according to a 203-page report.
“In summary, the preponderance of the evidence does not support that the personal romantic relationship between Mayor Franklin and Mr. Harper has involved malfeasance, misuse of City resources or violation of City policies,” the report concluded.

City policy does not require an employee to report a romantic relationship with coworkers.
Franklin had separated from her husband in July 2022 and filed for divorce in November 2022. The relationship with Harper began between September and December of that year, Franklin confirmed in the report.

“We’re not going out to dinner with flowers and roses,” Franklin reportedly told the investigators. “That’s not what this is. Lunches, drinks, conversations. We have affection for each other. (That’s) a reasonable term, that we are dating. I wouldn’t say, now we’re boyfriend and girlfriend. I would say we’ve developed strong feelings for each other.”
They both denied any “uninvited sexually-oriented verbal or physical conduct,” or any “quid-pro-quo element to their relationship” or favoritism, the investigation reported.

“I had a lot of big projects late summer and fall, and we probably just spent more time working together,” Franklin told Kangas Alexander. “At some point in the fall, we probably realized that we were developing feelings for each other, something beyond a work relationship.”
Before Franklin hired him as deputy mayor in 2018, Harper served as a state senator. He’d been elected in 2010, but resigned in 2013 amid rumors of an extramarital affair. At the time, he stated: “My work in Olympia takes me away from my family far too much.”
“To be a full-time husband, to be a full-time father and to maintain my full-time law practice, I cannot continue to give this job the amount of dedication it deserves or the people of the district deserve,” he added in 2013.
A little over a month after Harper’s resignation from the city, Franklin hired former Police Chief Dan Templeman as the city’s senior executive director. He started working in the mayor’s office Monday alongside Lori Cummings, who holds the same title.
Harper made over $211,000 a year plus benefits, according to the city’s salary schedule.
Executive directors sit parallel to deputy mayor in the city’s organizational chart. Tarver did not have Templeman’s exact salary as of Tuesday, and she did not respond to a question about whether Templeman’s hiring is effectively a replacement for Harper’s position.
COMMENTS
878-Sound familiar? Maybe with her on board they could call the conference:
“The Mayors Institute on Extramarital Affairs”. Just a thought.
And you know how phony this thing is? Remember that awful goofball Mayor of Sheboygan, Ryan Sorenson, another Democrat who tried to shut down Dave’s Who’s Bar Inn? He was also charged with ethics violations. The whole story is on Blog 68. Well he was at the same convention last year. Which in my opinion, says a lot.

SUMMATION
879-This whole thing reeks of scam. Here is what we know.
1-Just like the Superior Telegram and Duluth News Tribune, the AARP are nothing more than an arm or advocate or shills or call it whatever you want, of the Democrat Party.
2- 11 of these Mayors are Democrats, one is Independent.
3-All 12 of the cities are stagnant or declining in population with the exception of 3 of them and their increases are less than half of one percent.
4- There is nothing that I can find that any of these mayors have any expertise in on the subject of Pedestrian Safety.
5-Most of these cities are small and if they have Pedestrian Safety issues it’s probably because they aren’t running their city properly and should not be attending this convention.
6-This is a complete waste of taxpayers money. They wrap it up in a nice name like the “Mayors Institute on Pedestrian Safety”. Who’s going to say no to that? I will for one. It should be called “A Big Pile Of Democrat Crap” because that’s what it is. Cities have mayors, city councils, police and transportation departments that should be figuring out their safety plans.

And they are going to have monthly meetings in Washington, D.C.? And all or partly paid by the taxpayers and funneled by the AARP. Just look it up, it’s on their website.
7-If I miss one thing about Superior it’s the traffic or lack of traffic. Go live in Ottawa, Fort Myers or here in Vegas. That’s traffic. I’ll take the traffic in Superior any day.
FINAL COMMENTS
880-This is nothing more than a gift, a reward if you will from the Democrat Party to their most loyal little soldiers like Jim Paine. Like I said it’s all wrapped up in a nice little name and funneled by, in this case the AARP. There are hundreds of these going on through many other organizations. These are the things that Trump and Musk are talking about with the Department of Government Efficiency, better know as DOGE.

Here in Vegas, I see this stuff all the time. Go to any of the big casinos and their wearing their convention badges and their drinking, gambling and eating at the best restaurants. It’s all about good times. And that’s great but not on mine or your dime.

This stinks to high heaven and after this Blog is published I’m going to send it to DOGE. I will let you know if and when I hear something. We don’t need people like Jim Paine and his ilk running around Washington, Vegas or any other city for that matter living the high life on our tax money.

At the end of the day I’ll put my safety and the safety of my children in the hands of Elmer and Walter, things that actually worked. Not in the hands of the “Terrible Twelve”.

ELMER

WALTER SAFETY
881-Well that’s it for today. I hope you enjoyed it. Stay safe and I’ll see you all on the next Blog.
Thanks,
Brian
